While the Buddy Rich Big Band was on
break
from a set at
Washington DC's Blues Alley I was fortunate enough to be
allowed to board Buddy's tour bus for an autograph and a quick
hello.
Buddy was quiet, and
polite. I was in Cowboy Jazz at the time, and all I had to
write on was the business card shown at right. I gave it to him to
sign and we had a short conversation.
Buddy was known to HATE country music; I once heard him refer to it, onstage, as "suck city." But I had to explain what he was signing and hope for the best.
He was perfectly gracious, though I doubt he knew what to make of the name, or more likely, was thinking the words "Cowboy" and Jazz" to be an oxymoron.
